Based on the recent growth of the stock market, you may want to consider a gift of appreciated stock you have owned for more than one year.
If you continue to itemize your deductions, you can claim an income tax charitable deduction for the stock’s current value, plus, you would avoid paying capital gains tax.
If you have a traditional individual retirement account (IRA) and are at least 70-1/2 years of age, you can give up to $100,000 per year to charities and 501c3 non-profits, including HAPA, without being taxed on the distribution.
A qualifying distribution must go directly from your IRA to HAPA, and you may not receive any goods or services in exchange for your gift. This is a smart way to support HAPA while avoiding taxes on your required minimum distribution.
The donor-advised fund (DAF) is becoming an increasingly popular way to make a charitable gift. DAFs can provide immediate tax benefits while making your charitable giving easier.
If giving through a DAF, be sure to let your administrator know HAPA’s tax ID and mailing address.
